Guidehouse Insights Leaderboard: Automated Driving Systems
Assessment of Strategy and Execution for 20 Companies Developing Automated Driving Systems

Abstract

For the automated driving sector, 2024 has been a year of both progress and continuing challenges. Waymo and Baidu along with other Chinese companies have experienced growth, with more deployments of paid driverless robotaxi services. At the same time, Cruise has had to deal with the aftermath of a crash that severely injured a pedestrian in San Francisco, California, and led to a monthslong stoppage of its development and deployment efforts. Motional nearly ran out of money when Aptiv decided to stop investing in automated driving. Nuro also decided to end development of its purpose-built automated delivery vehicle and pivot its business model to licensing its automated driving system (ADS) software stack to other companies.

Raising new capital has been challenging for most of the companies in this sector. Among the few exceptions have been Waymo and Wayve, which raised $5.6 billion and $1 billion, respectively, in 2024. Others such as Pony.ai are raising funds at significantly reduced valuations. Even the more successful companies are struggling to develop viable commercial business models with the potential to be profitable within this decade. In part due to its financial challenges, Motional paused its pilot deployments to focus on continuing technological and business model development.

This edition of the Guidehouse Insights Leaderboard focuses on 20 companies that are developing ADS for light, medium, and heavy duty vehicles, rather than on the OEMs that may eventually deploy the technology. It assesses those companies best equipped to be the leaders in the development and commercialization of ADS to help drivers and improve safety, and quantifies their relative positions in the market.
