Abstract

Electrification of medium and heavy duty vehicles (MHDV) has focused on vehicles that have predictable duty cycles with adequate downtime that allows them to return to a depot and charge before they are needed again. Other segments of the MHDV market, such as vehicles with irregular duty cycles, MHDVs used for multiple shifts in a day, and vehicles without access to depot or private charging, are more difficult to electrify. New charging technologies that provide fast charging and an adequate public network are necessary to help electrify these MHDVs.

Megawatt Charging System (MCS), a new charger connector standard being developed, would provide up to 3.75 megawatts (MW) of continuous output. Charging at speeds of 1 MW and above will provide greater flexibility for vehicle operators, enabling MHDVs with limited downtime to receive a full charge before they are needed again. Building out a robust public charging network of MCS chargers, along with deployments at depots and ports, will enable the electrification of all segments of the MHDV market.

This Guidehouse Insights report provides an overview of the market for MCS by examining the technology, its recent standardization process, and the use cases it is best suited for. It includes forecasts for the sales and deployment of MCS, revenue and power demand from 2024 to 2033. Revenue is segmented by cost component into hardware, installation, operation, and maintenance costs. Power demand is segmented into new power demand based on MCS sales and annual power demand from all deployed MCS.
