Abstract

The smart metering industry continues to proliferate across both developing and developed regions. In North America and Europe, a growing number of utilities are advancing second-generation upgrade and replacement projects; these deployments are underpinned by significant technological advances in smart meter hardware, software, and communications. In emerging regions, such as Asia Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East & Africa, multiple nationwide rollouts and late adopters are helping accelerate high volume investment.

In this release of the Guidehouse Insights Global AMI Tracker, North America continues to lead in the number of new advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) deployments, with 1,504 of the 2,144 tracked projects and more than 157 million meters installed or planned. Western Europe has added several new projects and continues to advance multiple nationwide rollouts, now tracking 187 projects and nearly 195 million meters installed or planned. Eastern Europe is showing signs of growth, with 61 projects and nearly 47 million meters planned. Asia-Pacific remains the most fragmented but also the largest regional market, with 211 projects and more than 942 million meters installed or planned. Latin America remains an underdeveloped market compared to other regions, but momentum is building. The region now tracks 80 projects and over 27 million meters installed or planned. The Middle East has 38 projects and over 23 million meters installed or planned, while Africa’s market is gradually expanding, with 61 tracked projects and over 12 million meters installed or planned.

This edition of the Guidehouse Insights Global AMI Tracker provides an analysis of global utility smart meter projects. It tracks data related to global customer endpoints, meter manufacturers, AMI communications vendors, systems integrators, and meter data management vendors. It also includes an examination of the technologies, timeframes, and vendor selections for AMI deployments around the world, along with vendor selection share analysis for North America.
